DSCVRY #6

i don't quite remember where i first heard this latest discovery. it could have been one of the paste magazine samplers, while listening to the latest hype machine tracks, or last.fm. honestly it doesn't matter, what does matter is how good this band is.

nurses is an experimental indie rock band based in portland. often compared to animal collective and grizzly bear, nurses formed in 2006, but it was the release of the band's sophomore album ,apple's acre, that helped make 2009 a break-out year.

you can currently catch 'em on tour with the tallest man on earth. check the dates on nurse's myspace page

DSCVRY #4

my most recent discovery came to my attention after watching spike jonze's robot love story,
i'm here (trailer below). spike jonze knows good music and sprinkles it throughout the film (you'll hear sleigh bells and animal collective...just to name a few). however, the music that stands out the most comes from ASKA. ASKA's song, there are many of us, is heavily featured throughout the film and there is good reason. just trust me and listen to the song (below) and you'll see what i'm talking about.

more about ASKA (from her myspace page):
ASKA IS A CLASSICALLY TRAINED PIANIST WITH A DISARMINGLY ETHEREAL VOICE, HER COSMIC PRESENCE SPANNING THE LOS ANGELES ART MUSIC SCENE THROUGH AN ECLECTIC RANGE OF PROJECTS. ASKA HAS LONG HELMED THE LOCOMOTIVE POP OF MOONRATS, AS WELL AS WRITING AND PLAYING IN THE CONCEPTUAL ART BAND, THE SADS. AS A LIVE GALLERY INSTALLATION, THE SADS HAVE PERFORMED THROUGHOUT EUROPE AND THE US, AT ART BASEL IN MIAMI, PALAIS DE TOKYO MUSEUM IN PARIS, AND THE JOURNAL GALLERY IN NEW YORK. ALONGSIDE BECK STARK (LAVENDER DIAMOND, DECEMBRISTS) AND ASKA COMPOSES, ARRANGES AND PERFORMS IN THE 30-MEMBER, ALL GIRL, LA LADIES CHOIR, WHOSE DEBUT ALBUM COMES OUT JANUARY (TEENAGE TEARDROPS). ASKA'S FIRST SOLO FULL LENGTH RECORD WILL BE RELEASED FROM MANIMAL RECORDS THIS JULY WITH A SINGLE, "THERE ARE MANY OF US" (A-SIDE) / ALMOST THERE(B-SIDE). COLLABORATORS INCLUDES NICK ZINNER (YEAH YEAH YEAHS) AND FLEA (THE RED HOT CHILI PEPPERS). THE RECORD ALSO INCLUDES OTHER GUESTS SUCH AS NICK DEWITT (PRETTY GIRL MAKE GRAVES), LUCKY DRAGONS, KITTY JENSEN, NATHAN THELEN (MOONRATS) AND MONEY MARK.

15 is my favorite #, so i'm choosing 15

there was so much good music this past year, it was much harder than i expected to choose only fifteen. in order to make the necessary cuts, i based my decisions on replay value and the entirety of the album. for example, the most recent stellastarr* album, "civilized" was an excellent album and i could listen to the track "freak out" all the time, but it wasn't anywhere close to their debut album (self titled) that has been in my car stereo since 2003.

i wouldn't be surprised if more than one of these albums makes it on your list, but please remember, these are my favorite albums and i don't expect our tastes to be exactly the same. email me and let me know what your favorite albums of '09 were and if i forgot any that you think should be this list.

so without further ado...

15) Wale - Attention Deficit

14) We Were Promised Jetpacks - These Four Walls

13) White Lies - To Lose my Life

12) Telekinesis - Telekinesis!

11) The xx - xx

10) Edward Sharpe & the Magnetic Zeros - Up From Below

09) Passion Pit - Manners

08) Matt & Kim - Grand

07) The Temper Trap - Conditions

06) Royksopp - Junior

05) Animal Collective - Merriweather Post Pavilion

04) Islands - Vapours

03) Karen O and the Kids - Where the Wild Things Are

02) Phoenix - Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart

01) Mew - No More Stories are Told Today I'm Sorry They Washed Away No More Stories

(On the cusp: Dinosaur Jr. - Farm, Mos Def - Ecstatic, The Antlers - Hospice, Grizzly Bear - Veckatimest, Stellastarr* - Civilized, Julian Casablancas - Phrazes for the Young, Dirty Projectors - Bitte Orca)
