(31) Days of Good: Day 20

Blue Hawaii tells the story of a lush paradise. The way begins ambient and uncertain, but beautiful white shell beaches and carefree sunshine parties await and nourish those travelers with love in their hearts; their peace thus raised above the arguments found along the rocky road. The duo consists of Raph and Agor; they use voice, guitars, synths, drum machines, and other electronics to create a kind of tropical-pop with love ache melodies and experimental club rhythms. Brooklyn-based duo, Matt & Kim, released their third full length this year. Like the past two albums, Sidewalks is complete with simplistic lyrics, synth melodies, shouty singing, and the band's gleefully spazzy sound...everything we love about Matt & Kim.

a few of my favorite things...

(Photo = Sound of Music...if you don't understand the connection, you obviously weren't a soprano in your jr. high choir)

I've wanted to do something like this for quite some time now, but it's been much harder than I expected. I probably have at least 10 different drafts with some sort of "favorites" list that are just collecting digital dust. Why so hard? I guess it's because my favorites keep changing. For example, it seems like every time I hear my new "favorite album of 2010", a newer album comes out and trumps my old favorite (disclaimer: this really isn't a complaint, I love the fact that I keep falling in love with new music).

But you know what? I'm tired of my favorites never seeing the light of day. So consider this my (late) New Years resolution—I promise to share my favorites with the masses...even if they might change 15 minutes after I publish this post.

To start things off, here are my 5 favorite remixes (for at least the next 15 minutes):

ON THE ROAD: MATT & KIM

The Brooklyn duo, Matt & Kim, are going to be super busy this Fall. They'r shipping out on a huge Fall tour and their latest record, Sidewalks, is scheduled for November 2nd release (rumor has it we'll get a taste of the new stuff Aug. 31st!).

I definitely recommend catching one of the shows if you get a chance. Even if you don't care for their musical stylings, I guarantee you will still enjoy the show. I just recently saw them this Summer and it was super fun.

Be there!

15 is my favorite #, so i'm choosing 15

there was so much good music this past year, it was much harder than i expected to choose only fifteen. in order to make the necessary cuts, i based my decisions on replay value and the entirety of the album. for example, the most recent stellastarr* album, "civilized" was an excellent album and i could listen to the track "freak out" all the time, but it wasn't anywhere close to their debut album (self titled) that has been in my car stereo since 2003.

i wouldn't be surprised if more than one of these albums makes it on your list, but please remember, these are my favorite albums and i don't expect our tastes to be exactly the same. email me and let me know what your favorite albums of '09 were and if i forgot any that you think should be this list.

so without further ado...

15) Wale - Attention Deficit

14) We Were Promised Jetpacks - These Four Walls

13) White Lies - To Lose my Life

12) Telekinesis - Telekinesis!

11) The xx - xx

10) Edward Sharpe & the Magnetic Zeros - Up From Below

09) Passion Pit - Manners

08) Matt & Kim - Grand

07) The Temper Trap - Conditions

06) Royksopp - Junior

05) Animal Collective - Merriweather Post Pavilion

04) Islands - Vapours

03) Karen O and the Kids - Where the Wild Things Are

02) Phoenix - Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart

01) Mew - No More Stories are Told Today I'm Sorry They Washed Away No More Stories

(On the cusp: Dinosaur Jr. - Farm, Mos Def - Ecstatic, The Antlers - Hospice, Grizzly Bear - Veckatimest, Stellastarr* - Civilized, Julian Casablancas - Phrazes for the Young, Dirty Projectors - Bitte Orca)
