(31) Days of Good: Day 14

What does a lo-fi, beach pop trio have in common with a British wonky pop artist? The man on the moon himself, Kid Cudi.

Both of today's artists have done more than well for themselves, but there's no denying the impact Cudi had when he collaborated with Best Coast and Rostam Batmanglij for the converse produced (yes, the shoe company) track, All Summer, and teamed up with Dan Black on the Symphonies EP and the deluxe edition of UN.

Along with the Cudi collaborations and some epic "photobombing", Mr. Black has been super busy. He released Symphonies in the US at the end of 2009 and this year he toured the US and Canada, including stops at SXSW, Lollapalooza, and Austin City Limits.

2010 also saw the release of Black's Weird Science mixtape. Like me, you probably associate mixtapes with hip hop, but Black proves pop artists can hang with the best of them. Check out my favorite from the tape below and then download the rest here.

Next up, one of the biggest buzz bands of 2010, Best Coast.

I'll probably never understand why people long for LA, but I still dig Bethany Cosetino's story and inspiration. While Ms. Cosetino attended college in NY, she would spend her days longing for the life she left behind in sunny LA. This longing created Best Coast and the debut full-length, Crazy for You, best described as beach blanket lo-fi pop songs about "summer and the sun and the ocean and being a lazy creep"

T.O.R.N.A.D.O. hits BBC Radio 1

If you happened to tune in for the Zane Lowe show on BBC Radio 1 today (10/14), you were lucky enough to get the first taste of The Go! Team's latest offering, T.O.R.N.A.D.O. If not, lucky for you Mr. Lowe put the track up on his blog. (listen to T.O.R.N.A.D.O. below)

The track is the one the band have been opening with over the last few gigs. Lead vocalist (and one of the coolest person's in music), Ninja, describes the track as "it's a little faster, it's not actually our first single, which will be coming soon...it's back to the noise, the chaos, the lo-fi, the horns - it's kind of inspired by The Taking of Pelham 123, that kind of soundtrack - it's got a bit of that inside it. It's kind of introducing us back - we've been away for a little while - this is us comin' back."

She could have described it as sounding like cats in heat and I would still want to listen to it. Titled Rolling Blackouts and set to be released Jan 31st, the new album will also feature Bethany Cosetino (Best Coast) and Satomi Matsuzaki (Deerhoof). Needless to say, I'm super excited about The Go! Team's new album.

If you're not familiar with The Go! Team (you should be!) head on over to the band's official website and give'm a listen.

the veils are an indie/alt rock band based in london that have been working hard since 2001 and it definitely shows with their most recent release, sun gangs (released april 6th, 2009). plenty of websites featured sun gangs in their top 20 albums of 2009 and i probably would have to had i discovered them earlier.

they're set to play this years SXSW on march 17th, but if you live in the LA area, you have two chances to catch a show. on march 12th they'll be playing at the troubadour with happy hollows and on march 16th they'll be playing at the house of blues of anaheim (downtown disney) with black rebel motorcycle club.
