M.I.A.//Vicki Leekz

I'm a bit late on this, but after the big letdown Maya (/\/\/\Y/\‎) turned out to be, I was weary to once again jump on the opportunity to promote the latest from M.I.A.  With that said though, i'm happy to say that the recently released mixtape, Vicki Leekx, is the M.I.A. we all know and love.  I'm not sure if this is an apology or maybe an impostor was responsible for Maya (/\/\/\Y/\‎), and I don't really care...the mixtape's good.

Check out the track below if you don't believe me, then download the rest of Vicki Leekx for free here.

[on the rise] TRISTEN

I was first introduced to Tristen last week, via KCRW's Today's Top Tune, and was instantly intrigued.

Originally hailing from Chicago, where she first began recording music at the age of 14, Tristen packed up after graduating from college and headed for Nashville to experience the city's one of a kind music scene. That, and with such influencers as Bob Dylan, The Beatles, Lou Reed, Loretta Lynn, and Dolly Parton, Tristen has effortlessly blended pop, rock, folk, and country to create a fresh and organic sound, which she describes as, "neo-traditionalist pop". Her latest, Charlatans at the Garden Gate, is due for release February 1st, 2011, and I can already tell it will be in heavy rotation on my iPod.

Tristen is currently in the middle of a South East tour (check the dates here), ending December 4th in Nashville, with an in store 7" release show at Grimey's New and Pre Loved Music. Hopefully she'll make it out West for some shows after Charlatans at the Garden Gate is released.

In the spirit of Thanksgiving, Tristen is offering up her Eager For Your Love 7" for free download at her site, tristen.com.

The 7" includes Eager For Your Love, Baby Drugs (KCRW's Todays Top Tune aka the track that introduced me to Tristen), and Cheatin (previously unreleased b-side).

Want a physical copy of Eager For Your Love 7" and tour poster? Leave a comment with your favorite Tristen track and a winner will be randomly selected on 12/15 at 12pm.

SNOW & VOICES//SO FREELY

Snow & Voices, a definite favorite of mine, just released their latest, So Freely.

It's a cover of Tir Na Nog's song from the 1972 release, A Tear and a Smile. This is the first release from the the music collective's new covers project.

I can't wait to hear the rest of this project. I was introduced to Snow & Voices last Summer and I absolutely love their sound and stylings. Unfortunately, I missed their last show at the Hotel Cafe, so i'm crossing my fingers for another chance to see them live.

[new] Music Roundup

Short and sweet post today.

I gave myself a deadline to finish my final grad school project by Nov 1st, but seeing as how it has nothing to do with music, fantasy football, and/or comics, I've got a lot of work cut for me. So if you notice a lag in activity here in the next couple of weeks (hopefully not months), don't stress, i'll be back, and with even more time to share the music I love. In the meantime, you can always visit 35mmBeats for more music and pop culture happenings.

But without further ado, here are three brand new tracks from some of my favorite artists.

Enjoy!

[mp3] Deerhoof - The Merry Barracks (from the forthcoming album, Deerhoof vs Evil, out Jan 25, 2011)
More Deerhoof here.

[mp3] Lykke Li - Get Some (first single from her forthcoming album)
More Lykke Li here.

[mp3] Girls - Heartbreaker (from the forthcoming album, Broken Dreams Club, available Nov 22, 2010)

T.O.R.N.A.D.O. hits BBC Radio 1

If you happened to tune in for the Zane Lowe show on BBC Radio 1 today (10/14), you were lucky enough to get the first taste of The Go! Team's latest offering, T.O.R.N.A.D.O. If not, lucky for you Mr. Lowe put the track up on his blog. (listen to T.O.R.N.A.D.O. below)

The track is the one the band have been opening with over the last few gigs. Lead vocalist (and one of the coolest person's in music), Ninja, describes the track as "it's a little faster, it's not actually our first single, which will be coming soon...it's back to the noise, the chaos, the lo-fi, the horns - it's kind of inspired by The Taking of Pelham 123, that kind of soundtrack - it's got a bit of that inside it. It's kind of introducing us back - we've been away for a little while - this is us comin' back."

She could have described it as sounding like cats in heat and I would still want to listen to it. Titled Rolling Blackouts and set to be released Jan 31st, the new album will also feature Bethany Cosetino (Best Coast) and Satomi Matsuzaki (Deerhoof). Needless to say, I'm super excited about The Go! Team's new album.

If you're not familiar with The Go! Team (you should be!) head on over to the band's official website and give'm a listen.

Dust Lane

Yann Tiersen's latest offering, Dust Lane, is out today!

Dust Lane is the sixth studio album by Tiersen. Two years in the making, produced by Tiersen and mixed by Ken Thomas (Sigur Ros, M83, Dave Gahan), Dust Lane is an album preoccupied with mortality.

During its recording, Tiersen lost his mother and a close friend, and the music within embodies what it is to be bereaved. It is also an album about life not as something lost, but something to be live. Tiersen describes the album as, "not such a sad thing, but a colourful thing - an experience sometimes painful, but also joyful".

More about Yann Tiersen here.
You can purchase the album via MUTE or iTunes

coming soon: yann tiersen

Definitely one of my all time favorite artists, Yann Tiersen (
Amelie, Goodbye Lenin, Tabarly), is set to release his latest album, Dust Lane, October 11th in Europe (via MUTE) and October 12th in the US (via ANTI). He's also about to set out on a European tour with more dates promised. I was lucky enough to see Mr. Tiersen live awhile back (w/ Asobi Seksu...so good), so hopefully the tour makes it's way to the US, this is a show you don't want to to miss.

(yann tiersen @ the el rey theatre w/ asobi seksu, may 2, 2009)

A bit about Dust Lane (courtesy of yanntiersen.com):
Dust Lane is the sixth studio album by Yann Tiersen. Two years in the making, it was largely recorded on Tiersen's current home of Ouessant, a small island off the coast of West Britanny, with further parts recorded on an island in the south Philippines and last touches and final mix at The Chairworks Studio in Castelford with producer Ken Thomas (Sigur Rós, M83, Dave Gahan).

Dust Lane is, inescapably, an album preoccupied with mortality. During its recording, Tiersen lost his mother and a close friend, and the music within embodies what it is to be bereaved. It is also an album about life not as something lost, but something to be lived. "Not a sad thing, but a colourful thing - an experience sometimes painful, but also joyful," says Tiersen.

Head on over to the official site and you can stream his entire show at La Route du Rock Festival (for a limited time)
