(31) Days of Good: Day 4

Marina & the Diamonds (aka Marina Lambrini Diamandis) has been hard at work since 2005, but it was really in the last year that she became more of a household name. Marina's musical style ranges from keyboard-based ballads to more up-tempo new wave-style songs with full band backing—which I love!

Her debut album, The Family Jewels, has been certified gold in the UK and features 5 fantastic singles, my personal favorite being I Am Not a Robot. However, this track was actually released in 2009 (Gareth James from Clash called the track "one of 2009's best singles...an infectious pop track...) and re-released for The Family Jewels. Consequently, i've decided to go with another favorite of mine, the leadoff track from the album, Are You Satisfied?. I'm a sucker for piano/keyboard and this track doesn't lag in that department.

(sorry, but I can't post the track)

Listen and purchase Marina via Amazon, iTunes, & The Hype Machine

Los Campesinos! are an eight piece indie pop band that met in early 2006 at Cardiff University in Wales (interesting little fact, none of the members are actually Welsh). Since then, they have been hard at work showcasing their talents and entertaining fans with their energetic live shows.

The band's most recent release, Romance is Boring, is another one of my favorite albums of 2010, which made it difficult to pick just one track. One of my favorite things about Los Campesinos! is how each album's tracks blend together seamlessly, but not one track sounds the same. I went back and forth on this one, but eventually settled with Straight in at 101 (Plan A is in a very close 2nd). Los Campesinos! have always been able to find the humor in the tragic, and this song is a perfect example (pay attention to the brilliant opening and closing lyrics).

(sorry, can't post the track, but you can find it here)

Purchase Los Campesinos! via Amazon or iTunes

Indie Hop

I'm not really sure who started the recent indie/hip hop fad, or if it's even that new, but I know one thing...I enjoy it immensely.

Not that I dislike the genre, but I'm much more picky when it comes to the hip hop I like, and let's be honest, mainstream hip hop is nothing to brag about these days. But as of late, there is an influx of hip hop artists embracing their indie music love. I've included a few of my favorite artists and tracks below, plus links to their websites. Definitely check out the websites, all of these artists have their mixtapes/albums/experiments available for free download.

Childish Gambino is the hip hop alter ego of Community's, Donald Glover. Mr. Gambino has released three albums, one being a pair of mixtapes, from which the track below hails from. The I Am Just A Rapper mixtapes consist of popular indie tracks by Sleigh Bells, Animal Collective, The Knife, and more, with Gambino's flow and lyrical skills slapped right on top...simple, yet effective. These mixtapes, and more, are available for free download here.

Hoodie Allen is a NY based rapper and songwriter, who's been gathering quite a buzz on the blogosphere as of late. Hoodie's most recent work samples a diverse array of artists from UK pop singers (Marina & the Diamonds) and indie rock staples (Death Cab for Cutie). The new mixtape, Pep Rally, is available for free download here.

I did post of Rapdragons not too long ago (here), but in case you missed it, Rapdragons is the hip hop duo of Nick Often and Greg Ward. Hailing from Baltimore, MD, the duo recently dropped the mixtape, Featuring Baltimore, which is a collection of hip hop tracks each sampling a different band from Baltimore, including Beach House and Future Islands. Featuring Baltimore is available for free download here.

Hype Machine Radio

If you haven't already, go check out the Hype Machine Radio Show.

Every month, the good people at Hype Machine put together a "showcase of the hottest music and bloggers from around the world". I started listening to the shows about three or four months ago and every show introduces me to new music (including the tracks below) and blogs. You can stream each show online or simply download the shows for future enjoyment (they're great for long car trips).

HMATW

A buddy of mine recently released a mixtape with his group, Her Majesty and the Wolves. You'll recognize samples from the likes of Yeah, Yeah, Yeahs, Marina and the Diamonds, and B.O.B., and i'm sure you'll be introduced to new artists and tracks as you listen.

In short, the mix is super entertaining and the beats will keep you going all summer long.
